LASER HAIR REMOVAL
HOW IT WORKS
Our laser system
emits a gentle beam of light that passes through the skin, to the
hair follicle, where it is absorbed. The energy radiated from the
laser is converted into heat, which paralyzes the follicle while
leaving the surrounding skin untouched and unharmed. A cooling
process also pre-treats the skin protecting it from the heat
generated by the laser. The upper layer of the skin is cooled by
cryogen as it is applied onto the skin prior to each laser pulse.
Because of the cooling device, there is little discomfort felt by
patients at the treatment site, but the degree of discomfort varies
from person to person depending on his/her threshold. Every patient
will require two to three treatments as the process is only effective
during the growing cycle. Additional visits will be necessary to
catch follicles as they reenter the growth cycle.
BEFORE TREATMENT
|
All laser patients
must be seen by a physician before the procedure can take place. |
|
Avoid the sun four
to six weeks before and after treatment until your physician allows it. |
|
MUST avoid
bleaching, plucking or waxing hair for 6 weeks prior to treatment. |
|
For tan or darker
skin types, bleaching cream may be started four to six weeks prior to
treatment. Tan skin can not be treated! If treated, you will have
hypopigmentation (white spots) and this may not clear for 2-3 months
or more. Also, the use of tanning cream must be discontinued one week
before treatment. |
AFTER TREATMENT
|
Immediately after
treatment there should be some redness and swelling, which may last
up to 2 hours or longer. The application of ice during the first few
hours of treatment will reduce the discomfort and swelling. |
|
Makeup may be used
immediately after treatment unless there is epidermal blistering. It
is recommended to use new
makeup to reduce the risk of infection. |
|
Do not use any
other hair removal treatment (waxing, electrolysis or tweezing) for
4-6 weeks after the laser treatment is performed. Shaving or
depilatories may be used. |
There is some
sensation during Laser treatments, but it is comfortably tolerable.
How much or how little differs, since every individual has a
different pain tolerance level. Most Electrologists recommend
relaxation to better tolerate the treatment. Topical anesthesia may
be requested for Laser treatment, however, this should be discussed
with your physician prior to treatment.
